This tuesday, Year 5 went on a field trip to the Auckland city hall and I had the opportunity to join them. The Auckland live council put on different dance performances with different companies and workshops with the companies with schools around Auckland. When we first arrived, we were escorted to the Civic center to watch the Royal New Zealand Ballet company. We watched the ballerina, Abigail Boyle a famous New Zealand ballerina , do the sugar plum ferry from the Nutcracker. After, we learned some ballerina moves of our own and my inner little kid was coming out as I pretended I was a professional ballerina.
Next we learned about contemporary dance and the dance company taught us all the practice it takes to become and be a professional dancer and different cultural contemporary dancing such as samoa.
Last, we went to the Hip Hop dance company workshop and watched them do a dance to the mash up of various songs. Then we learned a dance to In my feelings by Drake from his new album. We even had the opportunity to have a dance battle which the kids got competitive and danced their hearts out!
The day was planned well and the kids had so much fun trying out different dance moves and experiencing live art! What a great field trip for the kids to experience and even myself to see the arts come alive in Auckland!
